Textile is related to art, craft and design. The development of textile industry is growing from time to time with various trends and philosophy. Telkom University, along with Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia (UiTM) designed an Online Joint Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design to facilitate students to learn more about textile industries from pre-creating a textile (textile research), textile design process, into textile marketing. This Online Joint Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design is scheduled in October 26th-28th, 2021 which is designed into 5 sessions by inviting 5 excellent lecturers from Telkom University and with Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia (UiTM).

Students who join this Online Class learn some topics as follow:

  1. Fashion Design Process

At the 1st session of the Online Join Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design (October 26th, 2021) Ms. Hasma Binti Ahmad Ph.D, a lecturer from UiTM shared about Fashion Design Process. According to Ms. Hasma, fashion can be seen as communication where it can represent identity, personality, or something else. Thus in designing a fashion, there’re many elements and principles of design that need to take into account. Fashion design is a process of creating new fashion objects or textile in order to work out its structure and allow production or replication involving practice-led solution, reflective practice in design projects and etc. Thus, in fashion design process there’s also a timeline, including: a) Design Brief, b) Research & Sourcing, c) Design Development, d) Prototypes, Sample & Construction, e) Final Collection, f) Promotion-Marketing, Branding & Sales, g) Production.

  1. Fashion Branding Concept

The 2nd topic of the Online Join Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design is Fashion Branding Concept, presented by Mr. Khairulazlan Bin Abd Karim, a lecturer from UiTM, in October 26th, 2021. Branding, in Mr. Azlan presentation, is a set of unique value; it can be a confidence, passion, belonging, action and security. A brand can be seen as the idea or image people have in mind when thinking about specific products, services, and activities of company, both in a practical and emotional way. Thus, branding in textile industries is absolutely important for because the overall impact of it determines the company’s success. Other than that, students also learn about other fashion or textile marketing strategy such as positioning, brand storytelling, product design, price strategy, and customer relationship.

  1. Textile Research & Design Exploration

Ms. Siti Hernida Bt Mohd Som, M.A, a lecturer from UiTM shared insightful material on Textile Research & Design Exploration on the 3rd session of the Online Joint Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design (October 27th, 2021). Based on Ms. Nida explanation, the textile design research and exploration are divided into 7 stages: a) Design Brief, b) Creative Research, c) Idea Generation, d) Design Development, e) Evaluation, f) Creation of a Collection, and g) Presentation.

One of the interesting projects shared by Ms. Nida was her student projects in creating a fashion or textile that is inspired by certain disease like Corona Virus and TBC. They conducted research on those diseases to determine what materials, motifs, and colors are suitable for their fashion products based on the results of these studies.

  1. Techno Textile

At the 4th session of the Online Joint Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design (October 27th, 2021), Ms. Prafitra Viniani, S.Ds., M.Sc, a lecturer from Telkom University talked about Techno Textile. According to Brown B (1998) cited in Ms Vini presentation, Techno textile is a fabric that incorporate new technologies and new functionality into a traditional textile material. In this session, students learned more about kinds of fabrics used in a textile, such as fiber/fabric blend, fabric properties which include physical properties and chemical properties.

  1. Textile Design & Ornament Application to Fashion Product

The last topic of the Online Joint Class in Textile Craft and Fashion Design was Textile Design & Ornament Application to Fashion Product, presented by Ms. Morinta Rosandini, S.Ds., M.Ds., a lecturer from Telkom University. In addition to knowing the meaning of ornament, participants also learned the types of motifs and techniques. At the end of the session, Ms. Morinta invited the participants to collaborate on drawing patterns virtually. Initially the pattern started with floral motif type then turned out to be colorful and nice pattern. It reminds us of our childhood drawing.(IO)***
