Ramadan Tradition Around the World. “Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims worldwide, where they fast from sunrise to sunset. This month is not only about abstaining from food and drink, but it is also a time to reflect on one’s spirituality, practice self-discipline, and do good deeds.”
To promote cultural awareness and understanding among international students, Telkom University‘s International Office holds a monthly event called “Ramadan Tradition Around the World.” The event aims to showcase the diversity of Ramadan traditions and customs around the world.
On April 13, 2023, the International Office will hold its Ramadan Tradition Around the World event in the Movie Room Open Library at Telkom University. The event is open to only 20 attendees, including four international Tel-U students: Haddy Joof from Gambia, Rabab Fawaz from Yemen, Ebrahim Nakhwa from India, and Amanzholova Aizada from Kazakhstan.
Ramadan Tradition Around the World Highlight
During the Ramadan Tradition Around the World event, Ebrahim discussed the culture of Sehri, which is the pre-dawn meal eaten before the day’s fasting during Ramadan. In Indonesia, Sehri is called sahur. In the second interval of the Ramadan Tradition Around the World event, Rabab talked about the sparkling iftar tents in Saudi Arabia, where people gather to break their fast together.
Aizada in this Ramadan Tradition around the World event, then shared her experience about the ramadan tradition of the people of Kazakhstan to eat horse meat during Ramadan. In this Ramadan Tradition Around the World, she said that this ramadan tradition has been passed down for generations and is a significant part of Kazakh culture during Ramadan.
Finally, Haddy Joof in this Ramadan Tradition Around the World event shared her cultural shock when she saw ramadan tradition of Indonesians eating Gorengan during iftar. In this Ramadan Tradition Around the World, she shared that ramadan tradition in Gambia, they usually break their fast with tea, which is a special tea served there like a tea shake topped with cream.
Ramadan Tradition Around the World event is an excellent opportunity for international students to learn about the diverse Ramadan traditions and customs around the world. Through this event, the International Office hopes to promote cultural awareness and understanding among Tel-U students and the wider community.
