INTI X TELU: ONLINE JOINT CLASS IN COMMUNICATION SCIENCE

INTI X TELU: ONLINE JOINT CLASS IN COMMUNICATION SCIENCE. INTI International University & Colleges Malaysia is one of our new partner universities which launched a collaborative program with Telkom University in this year (2022).  Previously, Telkom University managed to hold Online Joint Class with Batangas University Philippines, this time Telkom University collaborated with INTI International University and Colleges Malaysia to hold Online Joint Class in Communication Science on March 2^nd, 2022 and March 4^th, 2022.

Our first collaborative program with INTI International & Colleges Malaysia raised different topics we usually bring for Online Classes which are often about engineering, fashion, and entrepreneurship, this time we talked about Horror Films & Meme in Indonesia. Online Joint Class in Communication Science, TelU X INTI was designed into 2 sessions, with the topic:

1. TelU X INTI Intercultural Communication through Horror Films in Indonesia, March 2^nd, 2022
2. TelU X INTI Humor Communication Through Internet Political Memes in Indonesia, March 4^th, 2022

INTI X TELU: CLASSES HIGHLIGHTS

In the 1^st session of Online Joint Class, TelU X INTI, Ms. Diah Agung Esfandari, B.A., M.Sc., a lecturer at Telkom University leaded the class interestingly. Intercultural Communication basically means communication between individuals with different cultures. It allows us to give meaning to different aspects of our lives and communicate effectively with others in variety of social settings, helping us to understand the views and perspectives of other people. There are a) context, b) appropriateness, c) effectiveness, and d) motivation as components of intercultural communication based on Lustig & Koester (2010) cited in Ms Diah’s presentation in the 1^st session of Online Joint Class, Telkom University and INTI International University and Colleges.

The best part of this 1^st session of Online Joint Class, TelU X INTI was we all were invited to watch horror film entitled “Titisan Naya” by Riri Riza (2008) and then continued by discussing its intercultural communication. Almost all participants of Online Joint Class, TelU X INTI, including today’s speakers were not into horror films, but the discussion about ghosts turned out to be amazingly exciting. As stated by Ms. Diah in Online Joint Class, TelU X INTI that the topic of horror can bring us closer and is interesting to discuss because there is a certain culture involved; the closer the culture is, the scarier the horror stories are.

In the 2^nd session of Online Joint Class, Telkom University and INTI International University and Colleges, the topic of Humor Communication through Internet Political Memes in Indonesia was presented by Mr. Adi Bayu Mahadian, M.I.Kom., a lecturer at Telkom University. In today’s era, criticizing an issue is not only conveyed through speeches or demonstrations on the streets. Now with the existence of social media, criticism or suggestions are conveyed on social media and in a way that is unique and funny through memes. Likewise in Malaysia, Ms. Yee in Online Joint Class, TelU X INTI said that memes have also been used as a means of conveying criticism and suggestions in the political realm.

Telkom University and INTI International University and Colleges really presents a new topic and surely provides a lot of input for the participants. Hopefully we can next design more interesting OJC with INTI International University and Colleges Malaysia.(IO)***
