Game Development, Online Seminar TelU & KMUTT
Game Development, Online Seminar TelU & KMUTT. Since 2020, Telkom University has been collaborating with many prestigious universities in southeast Asia in conducting online programs. One of them was a Game Development Seminar, organized by Telkom University and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thailand. The Game Development Seminar was designed to facilitate students who have an interest in making and developing games. Thursday, May 11, 2023, an Online Seminar on Game Development was successfully held, attended by many participants coming from both universities especially those majoring in Multimedia Engineering Technology. They participated in this Game Development Seminar enthusiastically as they seek many inputs on game development to support their studies.
In this Game Development Seminar, two brilliant speakers, Mr. Sittichai Theppaitoon from KMUTT Thailand and Mr. Rikman Aherliwan Rudawan, S.T., M.Kom. from Telkom University Indonesia shared the Game Development including the types of game and its trends in Thailand game industry.
Game Development Highlights
As the opening of the Game Development Seminar, Mr. Rikman Aherliwan Rudawan, S.T., M.Kom., explained about game theory for entertaining purpose that based on Wikipedia, game has a function to give amusement to people and there are also objectives and rules in it. So, basically a person who plays a game will be amused. However, another explanation about Game Theory as a serious game coming from Clarck C Abt, 1970 that stated, “Games have an explicit and carefully thought-out educational purpose and are not intended to be played primarily for amusement.” Moreover, his idea about game is supported by Rickman Roedavan, 2021 with the statement that Digital Game, which are applied in serious fields and have an assessment mechanism for its players to improve their skill. Next, Mr. Rudawan in game development divides Game Theory into 4 categories, named digital game, game-based learning, non-game context, and non-digital game.
Another interesting idea in game development is game design. Mr. Rudawan, then, explained that game design is the process of designing and developing games, including gameplay, plot, level design, characters, graphics, sound, and the interaction between players and the game. In game development, three major components are required to consider:
- Storytelling
- World Building
- Character Building
According to Mr. Rudawan, Some important aspects in game development for Game Input: mouse, keyboard, gamepad, touch, gesture, voice, eye, body, image, and sensor. Furthermore, he added some important aspects in game development for Game Event: calculation, activation, visualization, interaction, transformation, animation, instantiation, collision, iteration, and condition.
Another interesting explanation about game development came from Mr. Sittichai Theppaitoon from with King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand. Firstly, he explained about daily time spent with media in January 2023 that internet users in Thailand, aged 16-64 spent 1 hour 43 minutes in a game console. He, continued to explain that the number 1 game in Thailand is Garena. He also added some steps to launch game in Thailand that probably might be useful for game developers in Indonesia:
- Test-test-test, meaning that if you did well in the soft launch, you might fail in the actual launch phase, and launching a game is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
- Localization is the key, because 80% of games in the top-grossing chart are in Thai language.
- Ads networking campaign:
- Ads creatives are the most important, do A/B testing.
- Go beyond an install, optimize for app events.
- Tiktok is in trending, but still low user quality (in terms of monetization)
- Use key opinion leader:
- Use content creators (Youtube, Facebook, Tiktok)
- If you have a limited budget, micro-influencers in Tiktok are not expensive.
At the end of the Seminar on Game Development, Mr. Rikman Aherliwan Rudawan, S.T., M.Kom., and Mr. Sittichai Theppaitoon gave such an invaluable advice for students of Telkom University, Indonesia and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand “If you are students, and you are in the middle of developing you game, just finish it, work hard, and work in a team to create a best-selling game.”
Lots of insight and knowledge gained, especially for students who do have an interest in Game Development. Thank you very much to Mr. Rikman Aherliwan Rudawan, S.T., M. Kom., and Mr. Sittichai Theppaitoon for giving us a clear explanation on Game Development.
