RI to Invite 109 World-leaders for Asia-Africa Conference Celebration

BANDUNG- The Foreign Ministry has announced it will invite more than 100 world leaders to attend the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, West Java, in April this year.

“We plan to invite 109 heads of states as well as representatives of 25 international organizations,” the ministry’s secretary general, Y.Kristiarto S. Legowo, said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.

He said the ministry would also invite UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to attend the celebration.

Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi, who is attending the African Union Conference in Malaysia, will reportedly present the Asia-Africa Conference invitation letters to leaders of African countries attending the meeting in Malaysia.

“The Indonesian government will later send a special envoy to present the invitations to heads of states in Asian and African countries,” Kristiarto added.

The celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference is slated to take place in Jakarta and Bandung from April 19 to 24.

“We have started conducting the preparations after President [Joko “Jokowi” Widodo] issued directives for the organizing of the event during a Cabinet meeting,” said the ministry’s acting director for Asia-Pacific and Africa Cooperation, Ferdy Piay.

Piay added that the ministry had been coordinating with parties interested in taking part in the Asia-Africa Conference anniversary.

The celebration in Jakarta will be held from April 19 to 23 and in Bandung on April 24.

“We will begin the commemoration of the Asia-Africa Conference with a senior-officials meeting in Jakarta, which will be followed by a ministerial meeting,” said Piay, adding that the Asia-Africa Summit would then be held in Jakarta on April 22 and 23.

During the celebration in Bandung on April 24, Asian and African leaders will participate in a historical walk of events conducted by their predecessors in 1955, said Piay.
