Innovation Management and Biomedical Engineering

Innovation Management and Biomedical Engineering. Telkom University through International Office in collaboration with Universiti Kuala Lumpur -Malaysia and Mapua University – Philippines organized the 2nd and 3rd Online Joint Class in Management, Engineering, and Design entitled “Biomedical Engineering-Telemedicine” and “Innovation Management” on Thursday, 6th May 2021 by inviting several experts from three universities. This second session invites three main speakers including:

  1. Dody Qory Utama (Telkom University) – Healthcare 4.0 Implementation: Blockchain Based Medical Record For Supporting Telemedicine Ecosystem
  2. Muhammad Noor Nurdin (Universiti Kuala Lumpur) – Biophotonics
  3. Lemmuel L Tayo, P.hD (Mapua University) – Bio Interfaces and Their Role in Biomedical Engineering.

Nowadays, technology makes it easier for every field of science to interact each other to comfort society, including the health sector. If in the past, inventions were limited to vaccines and drugs, today science and technology touch an even wider domain. The three speakers in the second session presented the science and technology collaboration nicely.

Dr. Dody Qory Utama (Tel-U) opened today’s class with an interesting presentation about Medical Records. Most of us might be unaware about our personal medical history or we may even ignore the last medicine we consume. In his presentation he stated that a system is needed to provide an effective access for patients and doctors to collect the health data. The system solution offered is a combination of Healthcare Technology (Medical Record) with Blockchain. Having such an infrastructure, the patient does not need to worry about data synchronization because all data will be recorded in the general register.

Another health innovation was presented by the second speaker, Lemmuel L Tayo (Mapua University) about the role of Bio Interfaces in the Biomedical Engineering. This Bio interfaces is the region of contact between a biomolecule, cell, biological tissue or organic material considered living with another biomaterial or inorganic/organic material. It working towards artificial recreation of human organs, aiding in transplants and helping millions around the world live better lives. Bio Interfaces focuses on the advances that improve human health and health care at all levels.

Apart from biological interference, the use of light and energy is also an interesting part of science. Presented Biophotonics, Dr. Muhammad Noor Nurdin (Universiti Kuala Lumpur) explains how the light and energy are utilized for detection, imaging, and manipulation of biological materials. In the world of health, Biophotonics is widely applied in STED Microscopy, Multidimensional Fluorometry, surgical laser, cosmetic laser, fluorescence microscope, etc. Hence, some researches also may lead this science to the development of much smaller size healthcare sensor.

Innovation Management

In order for its usefulness, innovation products need to be organized. In the third session of the Online Join Class with Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Mapua University, participants were given insights about Innovation Management. Three experts from three universities also invited to this session including:

  1. Elisier Fantilo (Mapua University)
  2. Prof.Dr. Cordelia Mason (Universiti Kuala Lumpur)
  3. Siska Noviarisranti, Ph.D (Telkom University)

The third session started with a fundamental statement regarding the meaning of innovation delivered by Elisier Fantilo from Mapua University. As stated, innovation refers to some definitions and terms related to the implementation of a new product, the organizational method in business practice, and responses to problems challenges or opportunities arising in social and economic environment. He also presented the idea about types of innovation which includes product innovation, process innovation, and the service innovation.

The implementation of Innovation Management looks exceptional in the collaboration between the second speaker, Prof. Dr. Cordelia Mason and #DemiLaut fronted by Haziq. With a vision to modernize traditional fishermen, #DemiLaut provides integrated solutions through advocating for artisanal fishers and for the marine environment and its support system. This collaboration enhances the tech value-chain solution includes mapping the sea; upscaling fishing gears, transport stock management, online market, and buy for impact.

Jumping to the deeper discussion, the third speaker, Siska Noviarisranti, Ph.D from Telkom University introduced the subject of the Innovation System. In her presentation, the innovation system defines as interconnected and relationship among different against of innovation, manifest in communication between and transfer of technology and knowledge among different systemic actors, in order to turn an idea into process, product or service on the market. She also explains how innovation system covers the fourth pillars includes National Innovation System, Regional Innovation System, Sectoral Innovation System, and Technological Innovation System. Hence, the fourth pillars positively advance the society at all levels.

Closing these two compelling online join class sessions, we are finally brought to understand that technology synergy in all aspects of life is a good news for people’s lives. Some of the negative impacts are only a large space for exceptional improvements in the future.(IO)***
