People now benefit greatly from using AI to perform specific tasks, which are used for a variety of activities including medical diagnosis, e-commerce platforms, robot control and remote sensing.

Telkom University and Multimedia University Malaysia held another session of the Online Joint Class to discuss more about Artificial Intelligent in Business by inviting two excellent speakers: Ts. Dr. Rathimala Kannan, a senior lecturer of Multimedia University Malaysia and Dr. Andry Alamsyah, a lecturer of Telkom University.

As mentioned by Dr. Rathimala, the world is transitioning to industry 4.0 which is a vision of the future of industry and manufacturing in which information technologies are going to boost competitiveness and efficiency by interconnecting every resource (data, people and machinery) in the value chain. The driving force of industry 4.0 is artificial intelligence. According to Dr. Andry, artificial intelligence is a program with the ability to learn and reason like human. In line with Dr. Andry, Dr. Rathimala in her presentation, defined artificial intelligence as a board and general term referring to any type of computer software that engages in humanlike activities, including learning, planning and problem-solving.

Machine learning is one of the most common types of artificial intelligence in development for business purposes nowadays that is primarily used to process large amounts of data quickly. Based on Dr. Andry, machine learning is divided into supervised learning and unsupervised learning.

For the case study of the use of AI in business and IoT for competitive advantage, Dr. Rathimala used Starbucks case. As we all knew that Starbucks is a coffee shop that sells huge numbers of hot and cold drinks around the world. Thanks to AI and the internet of things (IoT), it turns out that Starbucks is a pioneer in combining loyalty systems, payment cards, and mobile apps. The following are the 5 most interesting advantages that Starbucks get from the use of AI and IoT:

  1. Targeting customer with personalized promotion and offers
    Personalized means that customers are more likely to get suggestions for items they will enjoy. Starbucks uses this method to provide a more personalized experience for the 19 million active Starbucks Rewards member who use the Starbucks mobile app. From the mobile app, the data about what people are buying, where they are buying, how they are buying, combined with other data like promotion, inventory, insights into local events, AI can deliver better personalized service to other customers. Determining personalized offers is becoming a standard application of artificial intelligence, and Starbucks has been doing this since 2017 with its “Digital Flywheel” program.
  2. Insight-driven product development
    From the data about how customers ordered coffee, lattes, and tea while in Starbucks locations combined with selected several industry reports about at-home consumption, Starbucks can find customer order preferences and buying patterns that result in developing the products.
  3. Sophisticated real estate planning
    The AI technology at the heart of this application helps Starbucks to collect data like population density, average incomes, and traffic patterns to identify target areas for a new store.
  4. Dynamic menu creation and adjustments
    Dynamic menu based on customer, location, and time affects products, promotion, and pricing.
  5. Optimized machine maintenance
    Starbucks worked with Microsoft to develop an external device called a guardian module to connect the company’s various pieces of equipment to Azure Sphere. Azure Sphere securely aggregates data and proactively identify problems with the machine.
