Analytics Data Visualization with Self-Service BI Tools: Data-to-Insight-to-Action, An Online Joint Class Telkom University & MMU. On Friday (07/08/2020), Telkom University, in collaboration with Multimedia University Malaysia, and supported by Passage to Asean (P2A) held the 4th session of Online Joint Class under the topic:”Analytics Data Visualization with Self-Service BI Tools: Data-to-Insight-to-Action”. Previously, this topic had been delivered in the 3rd session covering definition of data visualization, types of data visualization tools, and table as one of the data visualization tool used in BI.

This time, Prof. Dr. Lau Siong Hoe, a professor of Faculty of Information Science and Technology at Multimedia University, Malaysia, as the speaker for this 4th session, covered 1) BI & BA in Data Science, 2) Types of Self-Service BI Tools, and 3) Self-Service BI Tool Development Cycles. Through this online class it was expected that participants are able to discover the capabilities of a self-service BI tools and to take analytics skills to a business-analyst level for strategic decision making.

According to Prof. Lau, Business Intelligence (BI) and Business Analytics (BA) are important to predict the future of a business as it will affect to its success. BI tools are designed to make sense of the huge quantities of data that organizations accumulate over time and to analyze the information and present it as actionable information that can guide decision making. Power BI is one of BI tool types that most people used in analyzing their business. Power BI has functional features in terms of:

  1. Data Discovery, Storage & Integration,
  2. Data Visualization & Reporting,
  3. Data Cleaning & Filtering,
  4. Collaboration & Communication,
  5. Easy & Intuitive User Interface,
  6. Real-time & Point-In-time Analytics

In term of self-service BI tool development cycles, there are five phases in Power BI, including getting data, data transforming, data modelling, visualization and analyzation, and publishing and sharing. Power BI is considered good application since it is free and user friendly for even beginner level. Although there is, of course, weakness side of the BI, the general features are functioned great such as forecasting, clustering, and so on.

Those are the points of the 4th session that hopefully enrich our knowledge and understanding on Analytics Data Visualization with Self-Service BI Tools. See you on the 5th Online Joint Class with the topic: “What Image Processing does for Medical Application”.(IO)***
